A New Toy

This post is going to deal with a bit of equipment which I recently purchased.  I graduated with my MFA in May of 2014.I received some money from family members which I held onto until now.  Black Friday came and I took full advantage of it.  I was looking for a 4K camera and one which had raving reviews was the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4.  Panasonic has dropped the price a few hundred dollars for December, so I bought one.  Another thing to mention is that I am building a Canon FD lens kit.  That will mean I will need a lens adapter.  Why?  The GH4 is a micro four thirds (MFT) lens mount.  Taking a look at the adapter world, the Metabones Speedbooster rose to the top.  This adapter is a focal reducer.  The adapter I purchased will gain your lenses one stop of light while changing  the crop factor of the camera's sensor.  The GH4's crop factor is 2.3.  The Speedbooster'a crop factor is .7.  Doing simple math shows me that the adapter on my camera will give me a new crop factor of around 1.6.  (The same crop factor as a Canon APS-C camera.)  My 28mm lens turns into a 45mm lens.  While my 35mm becomes a 56mm.  The better part of this adapter is the additional stop gain.  A 1.4 lens will become  nearly a 1.0 lens.  It will be interesting what this camera will create.
